My name is Jim and I have been playing for Anson St George CC since 1995, which is nearly three quarters of my life. I’m a pretty below average cricketer and have very slowly collated a few thousand runs for Anson over 30 years. I’ve made it to 100 once. I’ve crawled to a few 50s. I remember all 10 of the sixes I’ve hit for the club. I take a wicket once every two and half years. I used to be able to catch but I can’t anymore. Only playing for a club like Anson could such a meagre return give so much pleasure and fulfilment.
How do I describe Anson St George CC? I think my first blog post covers it best.
In short, we’re a friendly, sociable and inclusive cricket club. We play Sunday friendly cricket with our home games in Hornchurch. We’re a mixture of ages, weights, spectacle prescriptions, and shoe sizes, but of consistent abilities towards medium, weaker, and none at all end of the spectrum. We play to win, but not win at all costs. Everyone gets a chance to bat or bowl and there are no selection politics. We have fun on and off the pitch and we’re always open to new people joining us if they love cricket, regardless of ability.
